What are the choices for a comfortable bicycle seat? First, most any exercise bicycle can be modified to use a regular bicycle seat. Many exercise bikes come with very wide seats, much wider than regular bicycles. Most of the weight of the rider is supported by the seat. Less weight is supported by the arms and legs. Over a long pedaling session, if you're sitting on those muscles, you can develop cramps in the muscles.

That's why racing street bicycles have such small seats, to take the load off the hip muscles. More of your weight is on your arms and legs with a road bike especially if you ride hard and fast. But the trade-off is the narrow seats put pressure on the pelvic bones with the related nerves and blood vessels. That can cause numbness in the groin area.

Usually a wider exercise bicycle seat is better and the feel is improved with padding. Gel padding is what you want for the best feel. There are different types of gels with different feels. You can get a gel padded seat or buy a slip-on gel pad for your existing seat.

You can see gel pads and seats at your local bike shop. Discount stores often stock gel pads. Or shop online for a seat or pad. Since the size and fit of seats varies, make sure you can return the seat if it doesn't work for you.

Don't quit using your exercise bike because of a poor seat. A new seat or even an inexpensive seat cover may be all you need to keep you pedaling toward better fitness.

If you have ever been on an exercise bike, you will know how excruciatingly boring it is. There is absolutely nothing to do except pedal away for 20 or 30 minutes, or however long your workout session lasts. So is there anything you can do to alleviate this mind-numbing boredom?

Well if you are using an exercise bike at your local gym, you will often find that it is not always that boring. They may have a TV screen on the wall or music playing in the background if you're lucky. However the gym I used to use didn't play any music and had a small TV in the corner with the sound turned low so you couldn't hear it.

So if you are a regular gym member, the only thing you can do is to bring your own music and listen to it through earphones. You could also listen to the radio this way, or bring a book or magazine to read, although I always find it quite hard to read and pedal at the same time because I usually end up pedalling slightly slower as a result.

If you are using an exercise bike at home, it is slightly easier to make your workouts more exciting. You obviously have easy access to all of the books in your house, and you can also watch television and listen to music at the same time. This will alleviate the boredom and make the time pass a little faster.

Another thing you can do is to set yourself mini-targets throughout your workout. For example you can set yourself time limits that you want to be under after mile 1, mile 2, etc or kilometre 1, kilometre 2, etc.

This is something I do a lot when I use my own exercise bike at home. I not only have a time that I have to beat at the end of the workout, but I also have times that I have to be under after each kilometre. This keeps me focused, ensures that I don't drop my pace in the middle of the workout, and ensures that I maintain a good pace towards the end of the workout (when I start to increase the tension). Plus of course it makes the whole thing a lot less boring.

Overall I quite enjoy my exercise bike session nowadays because I not only have targets that I have to beat, but I always have music playing loudly in the background as well. The music seems to lift my endorphin levels even further, and as a result I always end up feeling really great at the end of the workout, particularly when I have clocked a decent time and beat all my targets.

We like this manual treadmill for its simplicity and durability. It has a much smaller footprint than powered treadmills, a real plus for those with limited space. The Schwinn 438 elliptical is a great improvement over the popular model 418 elliptical trainer. It has a larger footprint and is more stable allowing a maximum load limit of 300 lbs. Despite its larger foot print this elliptical trainer is relatively easily to move around. The handle at the rear allows a good handhold to lift and move the Schwinn elliptical trainer. The wireless heart monitor was greatly appreciated by most users and owners. Called telemetric heart rate monitoring and control it allows your heart rate to control the resistance needed to keep your heart rate within the target range you assign.

The Schwinn model 438 elliptical trainer is manufactured by Nautilus under a license from Schwinn. Nautilus does all the customer support for this model. There were only minor complaints concerning customer support most of which were the slow replacement of replacement or damaged Parts. Most people who own the Schwinn 438 elliptical trainer are relatively satisfied with their purchase. Initial setup is easy and only requires the basic tools. The average time spent assembling the elliptical trainer was about two hours. Missing screws, washers and an occasionally poorly made part were the main complaints brought forward during the Schwinn 438 initial setup. Several people received a poorly manufactured mast with a broken or uncompleted welding. In addition a fitness repair technician tells us that the electronics console is identical to some exercise bike models and is not very durable. However, all the useres we interviewed said they were happy with the electronics that were included on the Schwinn 438 elliptical trainer.

Most Schwinn model 438 elliptical trainer users said they liked the articulating foot pedals. However taller people complained about the short stride of approximately 18 inches. Many larger users prefer a stride of at least 21 inches when in the full run fitness effort. Height considerations a constant issue for tall people. One Schwinn 438 elliptical trainer owner said the machine was built for pigmies with its short stride and high profile. He has reported that he has to use the machine bent over or he will strike his head on the ceiling. The Schwinn 438 elliptical trainers handlebars appear to be made backwards and are uncomfortable to use. We can see no reason for this poor design feature that has caused several people not to be able to use their Schwinn 438 elliptical trainer.
